2012 Half-Way Goal Check

Well, it’s July (How is it ALREADY July?!), so I figure now is a good time to do a little check-in on the goals I set for myself for 2012. Like I said in the original goals post, I haven’t written out yearly goals for myself since I played softball in college almost 10 years ago. It was fun to think about what I want to accomplish this year and even more fun now at the half-way point to see how I am doing!

  1. Execute my marathon race plan and run a 3:40 marathon. Well, I definitely did not run a 3:40 (yet), but I PR’d in Houston with a 3:43:59. I executed every part of the race plan, except the whole negative splits thing. Not that I didn’t go out at the pace I planned, there was just nothing left in the tank to get those last 10 miles faster! I may have redemption at 26.2 later this year…we will see :)
  2. Race at least once a month. I would say that I have done pretty darn well here! In addition to the Houston Marathon, I have raced 6 times so far this year and the only month I didn’t race was February.
  3. Run Fast(er). Sub 1:44:00 Half MarathonSub 45:00 10k, Sub 36:00 8k, sub 21:00 5k - These have definitely not happened yet. I have only raced one half (1:44:21) and one stand-alone 5k (21:40). Definitely need to get some shorter races on my calendar!
  4. Consistent Weekly Mileage. Run at least 20 miles/week and log at least 1000 miles - I have run 540 miles so far this year – just over half-way to the goal. After the marathon, I definitely was struggling to get 20 miles every week, but now I have ramped up to closer to 30 every week and they are adding up fast!
  5. Ride Fast(er). 20+ mph in racesThis has been a bit mixed so far. I have only achieved over 20 mph officially in one sprint tri, but I rode 19.8 with a dropped chain in one race and 19.4 in another when I took a wrong turn and had a near fall. Going forward, my goal should probably be to stop making excuses and just execute on the bike :)
  6. Pile on Miles on the Bike.  ride 1900+ miles. – Half-way point: 1,003 miles! Got well over half-way on this one, but I should really blow this goal away as I continue 70.3 training over the next several months.
  7. Swim at least once a week. surpass 100,000 yds. - Half-way point: 58,745 yds! Well over half-way to the goal and many more to come as I start swimming twice a week every week!
  8. Strength train, do abs & complete “other” workouts. I will strength train and do abs no less than once a week. I was definitely on a roll with this in the early part of the year, but I noticed as I looked back at my weekly recaps that as the swimming and biking ramped up this spring, the strength training and abs went away. My morning riding buddies and I have talked about meeting an extra 15 minutes early before our rides to do some abs and strengthening exercises…need to make this happen.
  9. Do Yoga. YES! I consider this probably my best (new) accomplishment this year. It took me a while to get started, but once I did it in May, it became a consistent part of my weekly routine on weeks where I am not traveling.
  10. Eat 7 – 10 Fruits & Veggies a Day. This is pretty touch and go. When I am at home, not traveling and we have been to the grocery store, I am excellent at it. When I am on the road or we have been too busy to shop, I suck. I am not sure I see this pattern changing anytime soon, but it continues to be a conscious goal everyday.
  11. Nurture the blog. Blog at least 3 times a week and make my blog better in general. Add/complete a travel page, dig up some pictures that I do not have electronically and include them in the “About Us” section and get my professional wedding pics up on the “Becoming the Parkers” page. In general, I will say that (in my opinion), the blog has improved from where it was 6 months ago. Feel free to disagree, I love feedback! I am learning a little more about what I want the blog to be and what its identity is. I do think there are still many things I can learn, but I hope it is a little place that people enjoy coming to :) According to my stats, I have been blogging 3.5 times a week! Success! And I did update the “About Us” and “Becoming the Parkers” pages, but the travel page is still untouched from the beginning of the year.
  12. Stay in TouchI can’t say that I have been any better at this than I have been in the past. How do people do this?!
  13. Quit obsessing over what others thinkUm, maybe I have convinced myself to let a few things go that would have bothered me in the past? But, in general, I think I will always need to remind myself to live my own life and not care so much about what everyone thinks. It is in my nature. For that reason, it will always, always be a goal of mine so that I constantly remind myself how much happier I am when I don’t worry so much about everyone else and focus more on myself.
I must say that I am pretty happy with how this year has gone so far! I also am happy with the majority of the goals that I have set at this point. I will add a few now that I have a better feel for what the rest of my year will look like:
  1. PR 70.3 in October. My training schedule will suffer some because of all the travel I have between now and the race, but I think it is very reasonable to take the 9 minutes off that I lost due to a flat tire, as well as 17 minutes off of the run to go sub-2:00. This would give me a HUGE PR, even if the bike time is a little slower because my fitness level may not be as strong on the bike as it was at Augusta last year.
  2. Have the time of my life at Hood to Coast. This is not a goal that will be hard to achieve, but I cannot leave off the event that I am looking forward to more than anything else!
  3. BalanceI think I have always been pretty good at this, but I am going to get a really true test this summer and fall. I have to manage my training, travel for work and travel for fun without losing my mind or stressing too much about missed workouts. I need to effectively balance all of the demands and still figure out how to enjoy my family, friends, and life stuff!
Well, that’s a wrap on goals! I am curious how everyone else is stacking up against their goals so far in 2012?

Great recap and check-in! You are doing really well IMHO.

I really have only one goal for the year (though it had some sub-goals). It could still happen–but I’m trying to be realistic too. If I don’t do it this year, it rolls over into next year. :^)

I can not believe it is half over!!!

Wow, you are right on track! So many biking and swimming miles/yards… I might have to start tracking those next year, if I continue moving in this direction. Great upcoming goals, too- you’re definitely gonna have a blast at HTC!

  5. chasingthekenyans says:

All the mileage looks fantastic! Overachieving on all three counts :)

Staying in touch… Not sure how people do it (/did it prior to FB and texting)! I’m not good at it either but I make more of an effort than a lot of my college friends (in my opinion…)

  6. Ricole Runs says:

It looks like you’re straight up dominating those goals! Nice job. I’m not getting any faster this year yet either which is a bit depressing. Maybe by the end. And let’s DEFINITELY have the time of our lives at Hood to Coast!

Tell me what you think!
